A useful guidebook to some of the most important historical and cultural locations in the world, the UNESCO World Heritage List added 33 new cultural treasures and nine natural wonders during this month’s 45th session of the World Heritage Council held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Locations on five continents were chosen from a list of nominees to be permanently inscribed on the World Heritage list, creating a memorable highlight on any group itinerary.
The only U. S. site included in the list in 2023 was the Hopewell Ceremonial Monuments in Ohio, a collection of eight monumental earthen structures constructed up to 2,000 years ago. UNESCO described the structures, now reduced to mounds, as “the most representative surviving expressions of the Indigenous tradition now referred to as the Hopewell culture. ”
